Spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims Aga Khan dies at 88
Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of Ismaili Shia Muslims, has died in Portugal’s capital Lisbon.
He was 88.
Karim al-Husseini, as he was known, led the Ismaili community for more than six decades.
His successor will be named soon, following Ismaili tradition.
Born in Geneva in 1936, he spent his early years in Kenya and later studied at Harvard.
He became the Aga Khan at 20 after his grandfather’s death in 1957.
Known for his philanthropy, he promoted Islamic culture and development worldwide.
His foundation, based in Switzerland, supports health care, education, and rural development in more than 30 countries.
Despite his lavish lifestyle, al-Husseini was known as a bridge-builder between Muslim societies and the West.
He is survived by three sons, a daughter, and grandchildren.
