17-year-old football prodigy balances his meteoric rise with a deep commitment to his Muslim faith

Recently, he became the first Muslim footballer to fast during Ramadan while training with Spain’s national team, a testament to his discipline and resilience.

Yamal’s connection to his faith runs deep. Raised by his grandmother in a home steeped in Islamic traditions, she taught him a special dua (prayer) to recite as he steps onto the pitch—a practice he continues with devotion. 

Often seen making dua on the field, Yamal openly reflects on his commitment, saying, “I fast during Ramadan. It is about your faith and your religion. I believe in my religion, and I’m healthy enough to fast.”

This steadfast adherence to his beliefs has set Yamal apart. 

In 2024, he became the youngest winner of the prestigious Kopa Trophy, an award recognizing the best-performing player under 21. 

The same year, he was named among the top 10 players in the Ballon d’Or rankings, cementing his place as one of football’s brightest stars.

Yamal’s rise began at Barcelona’s iconic La Masia academy, which he joined at just seven years old. 

By 15, he debuted for Barcelona’s senior team, becoming the youngest to do so. 

In his first season, he tallied seven goals and 12 assists in 32 appearances, earning widespread acclaim.

On the international stage, Yamal made history by becoming the youngest-ever player to score for Spain during a match against Georgia at just 16 years old. 

By the end of 2025, he had earned 10 international caps and scored four goals, further solidifying his status as a generational talent.
