Spain is witnessing boom in Muslim-friendly tourism
Rich Islamic heritage of Spain, especially the legacy of Al-Andalus, is drawing Muslim tourists keen to explore this history
MADRID, Spain – As the summer tourism season wraps up, statistics predict Spain will have welcomed 85 million international tourists this year, marking an impressive 16.4% increase from 2022.
A significant chunk of these tourists hail from Muslim-majority countries like Turkiye the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
The rich Islamic heritage of Spain, especially the legacy of Al-Andalus, is drawing Muslim tourists keen to explore this history.
And Spain is responding to the call.
Whereas earlier, Muslim tourists primarily found Islam-oriented facilities in Andalucía, the scope has now expanded countrywide.
Establishments across Spain are offering Halal food, spaces for prayer, and more to ensure the comfort and convenience of their Muslim guests.
Local businesses are stepping up too.
Aicha Fernández, a local entrepreneur, has initiated the ‘Halal Experience’ – a venture dedicated to training companies to cater to the specific needs of Muslim clientele.
This project also spotlights Spain’s rich Islamic history, with guided tours in cities like Toledo, just an hour from Madrid, and even in Madrid itself.
Bárbara Ruiz-Bejarano, from the Las Fuentes Foundation, adds that there’s vast potential in tapping into Muslim-friendly tourism.
Unlike the typical beach-going tourist, Muslim visitors often seek a more cultural and historical exploration.
This trend is also recognized by the Spanish Halal Institute, which accredits businesses offering Halal services.
