A 19th-century Islamic seminary in the state of Uttar Pradesh faces uncertainty about its future.
This is after the Indian government’s recent establishment of an anti-terror police squad near it.
The move came as an unpleasant surprise for several residents and has triggered anxiety among many Muslims.
The Darul Uloom seminary campus is tucked between multiple backstreets at the center of Deoband, a nondescript town in the north Indian state.
Inside the seminary, thousands of young men study Islamic texts with scholars and teachers.
Founded in 1866, Darul Uloom Deoband draws students from all over the world.
