South African Province Devastated By Deadly Floods
Over 400 people are dead and about 40,000 displaced after some of the worst flooding in South Africa’s history.
Affecting the country’s KwaZulu-Natal province, it has devastated the eastern city of Durban, which has a seaport vital to the country’s economy.
On Monday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster.
That is expected to rush emergency aid to the area.
South Africa’s government is immediately directing $68 million to the effort.
Ramphosa blamed the flooding on climate change.
But some critics blame poor infrastructure, as well as the fact that the majority of residents affected lived in makeshift shacks in informal settlements.
Officials say the overall disaster declaration is likely to remain in place for three months, providing enough time and resources to rebuild.
