Somalia enacts historic Labour Code to boost workers’ rights
New law aligns with global standards, improves job security, and protects informal workers, marking a major step in Somalia’s economic reform efforts
MOGADISHU, Somalia (MNTV) — Somalia has ushered in a new era of labour reform with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signing a historic Labour Code, the first major update to the country’s employment laws in over five decades.
The legislation aims to modernize workplace regulations, strengthen workers’ rights, and align Somalia with international labour standards.
The new code, developed through extensive collaboration between the Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU), the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, and the Somali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), introduces key provisions to improve working conditions.
It also ensures fair wages, regulates working hours, and enhances workplace safety.
The code extends protections to workers in the informal sector, which makes up a significant portion of Somalia’s workforce.
“This is a historic achievement for Somalia,” said Omar Faruk Osman, General Secretary of FESTU, which spearheaded the push for reform.
“For decades, workers lacked the legal protections they deserved. This new law paves the way for fair treatment, better working conditions, and greater economic inclusion.”
The legislation, which incorporates International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, is seen as a critical step in Somalia’s efforts to rebuild its economy after years of conflict.
Experts say the code reflects successful social dialogue among workers, employers, and the government, positioning Somalia as a nation committed to fostering a stable and equitable labour market.
By prioritizing workers’ rights, Somalia aims to attract foreign investment, stimulate economic growth, and integrate more effectively into the global economy.
The Labour Code is expected to address long-standing workforce challenges while ensuring compliance with international standards, marking a milestone in the country’s ongoing reform agenda.
