Somali military claims killing 25 al-Shabaab fighters
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) – The Somali military on Tuesday said that it had killed 25 al-Shabaab fighters during an operation in the country’s central Hiiraan region, according to Somali military radio.
The military operation was conducted on the outskirts of the Mahas district, said Mohamed Ibrahim Hassan Bakaay, a military commander.
The army also took control of al-Shabaab strongholds in the area, he added.
There are casualties on the military side as well, a military official in the central Hirshabelle state told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.
The official did not give more details.
Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated group, has been fighting against the Somali government and African Union peacekeeping mission forces in Somalia since 2007.
