Palestinian fighters in control of large areas inside Israel after shock infiltration
GAZA:
Palestinian fighters are in control of large areas inside Israel, including communities and army outposts near the Gaza separation fence, according to reports in Israeli media.
Palestinian fighters staged a dramatic assault against Israel on Saturday and entered many areas controlled by the Israeli military.
In some areas, Palestinians are also holding hostages inside their homes and other buildings, with exchanges of fire ongoing.
Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari confirmed that Hamas has taken hostages to the Gaza Strip.
Hagari said that fighting was ongoing in 22 locations. He added that four divisions have been deployed to the separation fence with Gaza, alongside an additional 31 battalions already there.
Hamas’s political representative, Saleh al-Arouri, told Al Jazeera Arabic that the group has Israeli commanders in its custody.
“We trust that the resistance will free all of Palestinian land and there will be solidarity in Palestine and around the world, defending Al-Aqsa,” he added.
“This is the time for taking part in resistance. Last year we lost over 200 martyrs. I call on all Palestinians and young people to claim victory over Israel.
“We entered this fight knowing there will be a reaction. We did not enter thinking it will be over in a few hours.”
Arouri said that they anticipated a reaction from Israel, and knew from the start “that this would not be over in a few hours”.
