Secret Service chief exits amid storm over Trump assassination attempt
Kimberly Cheatle has resigned as Director of the Secret Service following intense scrutiny over lapses in security of Donald Trump.
Cheatle announced her resignation, acknowledging failures in protecting Trump during the July 13 rally in Pennsylvania.
She had been leading the agency since 2022, and had initially refused to step down in the wake of the shooting.
Cheatle’s resignation comes amid bipartisan criticism, along with calls for her removal from Congress.
Observers say this has been fueled by her inadequate responses during a House Oversight Committee hearing.
The Secret Service is facing pressure to restore public trust and address significant security lapses that allowed 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks to shoot Trump from an unsecured rooftop.
