Science spurs water solutions in East Africa
New strategies and partnerships are helping East Africa tackle water scarcity and climate threats through research-driven innovations
NAIROBI, Kenya (MNTV) – As East Africa grapples with water scarcity and climate change, science-backed solutions are offering hope for sustainable water security across the region.
At the inaugural CGIAR Science Week in Nairobi, global leaders, scientists, and policymakers launched the International Water Management Institute’s (IWMI) Strategy 2024–2030 for East Africa.
Mark Smith, Director General of IWMI, emphasized that water security must be treated as a systemic issue.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has invested $2 billion in irrigation and water management in 100 projects worldwide, while in East Africa it has supported 14 projects in 12 countries.
Sara Mbago-Bhunu of IFAD highlighted the need for greater public and private investment in water systems, particularly to benefit smallholder farmers.
Panel discussions stressed the importance of cross-sector collaboration, with farmers and researchers calling for efficient water use strategies and better adoption of water-saving technologies.
