Saudi Arabia urges pressure on Yemen rebels to establish peace
SANAA, Yemen (AA) – Saudi Arabia on Saturday called for international pressure on Houthi rebels to join efforts for establishment of peace in war-torn Yemen.
In a Twitter post, Saudi Deputy Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman said he met with US special envoy Timothy Lenderking in Washington “to discuss the latest developments in Yemen.”
“Although the momentum of the truce remains high, I reaffirmed the need for the United Nations and the international community to pressure the Houthis into reopening the roads of Taiz, deposit revenues of the Hudaydah port, and engage with peace proposals,” bin Salman said.
Last month, Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition accepted a UN-brokered two-month truce under which all offensive military operations were halted.
Bin Salman affirmed the Saudi-led coalition’s “backing of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council and its supporting entities, and our aspirations for reaching a comprehensive political resolution to the crisis.”
Yemen has been engulfed by violence and instability since 2014 when Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels captured much of the country, including the capital Sanaa.
The Saudi-led coalition entered the war in early 2015 to restore the Yemeni government to power.
