‘Russia targeted Israeli jets in Syria in May’
JERUSALEM (AA) – Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz has revealed that Russian batteries were fired at Israeli warplanes during an airstrike in Syria in May.
Gantz told reporters at a conference organized by Israeli Channel 13 that a Russian S-300 battery fired at Israeli warplanes in Syria for the first time.
He described it as a “one-off incident.”
The Russian anti-aircraft battery missed Israeli jets, he said, adding that when the missiles were launched, Israeli planes “were no longer around.”
Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, which it said were against Iranian targets.
Israel and Russia have a military coordination agreement on Syria.
