Russia Surrounds The Ukraine Capitol As Its President Says Country Is Left Alone To Fight
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says his country has been “left alone” to fight Russia.
Zelensky asked Europeans on Friday with “combat experience” to take up arms and defend Ukraine against invading Russian forces, adding the West was too slow to help his country.
His dramatic call for help came as some Russian forces reportedly reached the city’s northern suburbs.
An airbase on the northern outskirts of the capital Kyiv fell to the Russians after dozens of attack helicopters took part in the assault.
Russian military units are attempting to encircle the capital.
Russia has “eliminated” Ukraine’s air defenses and has complete air superiority.
However, Ukraine is putting up stiff resistance, according to a senior Western intelligence officer.
Russia says its forces have destroyed more than 70 military targets, including 11 airfields in Ukraine.
U.S. President Joe Biden announced severe new sanctions against Russia, including freezing assets of major banks and cutting off high-tech exports to the country.
