Rohingya groups demand justice, unity in Burma’s Rakhine state
Rohingya organizations globally have demanded justice and peaceful coexistence in Burma’s Rakhine state.
This comes as fighting escalates between the military junta and the Arakan Army.
In a joint statement, 28 groups urged the Buddhist dominated Arakan Army to respect the rights of minorities, including the Rohingya.
They stressed the need for unity to rebuild a peaceful and prosperous Rakhine state.
They accused the Arakan Army of human rights abuses such as forced displacement, killings and extortion.
The statement also warned of a famine threatening 2 million people in Rakhine.
More than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees live in Bangladesh, while 500,000 remain in Rakhine under the Arakan Army’s control.
The groups called for an end to violence and urged cooperation to ensure justice, equality, and basic rights for all.
The groups said the Burma military’s aim is to keep Arakan state in a perpetual state of poverty and division, exploiting land and resources.
