Rising temperatures break records in Türkiye
ANKARA, Turkiye – Extreme temperatures, heat waves, and forest fires are wreaking havoc in various parts of Turkey, particularly in Eskişehir province, where the mercury has risen to a record 49.5 degrees Celsius (121.1 degrees Fahrenheit).
Turkiye’s Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Mehmet Oezhaseki, has called for public awareness to combat climate change.
According to Turkish newspaper Hurriyat, the ministry has advised people to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day.
In recent days, forest fires have been reported in several provinces, including Bolu, Bingoel, Denizli, Antalya, and Eskişehir.
Helicopters, airplanes, land vehicles, water tankers, and firefighters are involved in the firefighting efforts.
No fatalities have been reported, but large areas have been burned.
Turkey is experiencing travel disruptions due to extreme conditions, with humidity reaching 90% in some regions.
The current heat wave and fires are exacerbated by the El Niño weather phenomenon.
