Rishi Sunak Becomes UK’s First Hindu PM
Rishi Sunak became the United Kingdom’s first Hindu prime minister on Monday.
He is also the first person of color to hold the office.
Sunak’s appointment comes amid political turmoil after the forced departure of his predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss in less than two months.
The British empire once spanned nations across Asia comprising mostly people of color and different faiths.
The 42-year-old Sunak is also the U.K.’s youngest prime minister in 200 years.His appointment coincided with the observance of Diwali, the Festival of Lights celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains globally.
