Rights groups fight for extended voter registration in Georgia after Hurricane Helene
Rights groups have filed a lawsuit urging Georgia to extend its voter registration deadline to October 14 after Hurricane Helene hit the region.
They say the disaster has caused power outages, road damage, and disrupted postal services, making it challenging for many to register by the original October 7 deadline.
The lawsuit, led by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and supported by the ACLU and NAACP, seeks to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the upcoming elections.
Amir Badat, special counsel at the Legal Defense Fund, says the state should step in to protect residents’ fundamental right to vote by extending the voter registration deadline.
Georgia is among the states hardest hit by Hurricane Helene.
