Resolution recognizing Islam as major religion sent to House Committee
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Congress has taken a significant step towards recognizing Islam as a major religion and highlighting its role in promoting peace and harmony.
The resolution was introduced by Representative Al Green of Texas and supported by Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Andre Carson.
It counters efforts to portray Islam as radical and aims to discourage anti-Islamic actions, including desecration of the Holy Quran.
The resolution, received by the House on July 28, aims to enhance understanding and respect for Islam within American society.
It has been referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The resolution explains key Islamic principles, practices, and traditions, noting that “Islam” means “submission to the will of God” and “peace.”
It acknowledges the Holy Quran as Islam’s primary scripture, highlighting its significance as a source of divine guidance.
The resolution also highlights that Islam is the second largest and fastest-growing religion globally, with around two billion Muslims worldwide, including approximately 3.5 million Muslims living in the US.
