Researchers Estimate Covid-19 Killed 18 Million People
A new study suggests the COVID-19 pandemic may have claimed over 18 million lives worldwide by the end of 2021, more than three times the official death toll.
The higher global casualty estimate is believed to be more realistic, according to analysis by a consortium of health researchers published in the medical journal The Lancet.
Researchers based their calculations on the number of “excess deaths,” which they believe were caused directly or indirectly by the pandemic.
These were calculated by comparing the difference between the number of recorded deaths from all causes, and the number of expected deaths based on previous patterns.
