Rescue operation underway in English Channel after migrant boat accident
LONDON (AA) – A search and rescue operation is underway in the English Channel after a major accident involving a small migrant boat, the British Coast Guard said Wednesday.
Deaths are feared, according to local reports.
Some local reports suggest that as many as 30 migrants were onboard.
HM Coast Guard helicopters alongside one from the French Navy are also part of the operation.
“We are aware of an incident in UK waters and all relevant agencies are supporting a coordinated response,” a government spokesperson was quoted as saying by local media.
The incident comes amid reports of rising numbers of small boat arrivals from France via the English Channel.
