Republicans cry foul over judges ‘unretiring’ ahead of Trump’s second term
With Donald Trump’s second term approaching, several federal judges are reversing their retirement plans, triggering outrage among Republicans.
Judge James Wynn of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, along with district judges Algenon Marbley and Max Cogburn in North Carolina, rescinded their retirements, denying Trump vacancies to fill and tilting the judiciary rightward.
GOP leaders, including Senator Thom Tillis and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, called the moves unprecedented and politically motivated.
McConnell demanded judges recuse themselves from upcoming cases.
Democrats defended the judges, recalling Republican decisions like blocking Obama’s Supreme Court nominee in 2016. Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin pointed to bipartisan realities behind recent court vacancy deals.
While not entirely new, such reversals have precedents, including judges under Bush and Obama.
