Red Cross provides Ramadan aid to detainees in Somalia
International Committee of the Red Cross distributes food and essential supplies to nearly 5,000 detainees across Somalia
MOGADISHU, Somalia (MNTV) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has launched a Ramadan assistance program to support nearly 5,000 detainees across 16 detention facilities in Somalia.
The initiative aims to ease the hardships faced by those in detention during the sacred month, ensuring they receive essential food supplies and moral support.
Somalia, an African country on the shores of the Indian Ocean, is located in the Horn of Africa. It shares borders with Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya to the southwest and is bounded by the Gulf of Aden to the north.
The country has faced decades of armed conflict, social and political instability, and the devastating effects of climate change. From 2021 to 2023,
Somalia experienced its worst drought in four decades, leading to a critical food crisis that affected 7.9 million people.
“Ramadan is a time of reflection, compassion, and community for Muslims worldwide, but it can be particularly difficult for detainees,” said Antoine Grand, head of the ICRC in Somalia.
“Our annual assistance ensures they do not feel forgotten during this important period.”
As part of the program, the ICRC is distributing food packages containing dates, milk powder, groundnuts, and biscuits to detainees. Detention facility kitchens will also receive essential supplies such as sugar, tea leaves, lentils, tomato paste, and vegetable oil.
Additionally, in a symbolic act of solidarity, the organization is providing 512 goats across 16 facilities. These provisions are meant to supplement the existing food rations provided by authorities.
The ICRC’s humanitarian work in Somalia extends beyond Ramadan. Since 1977, the organization has regularly visited detention centers to assess conditions and ensure compliance with national and international standards.
In 2023 alone, the ICRC conducted 51 visits to 16 facilities, supported health centers in five detention sites with medical supplies, and carried out rehabilitation work in three locations.
This Ramadan initiative reflects the ICRC’s broader commitment to upholding human dignity and providing relief in difficult circumstances.
As the holy month begins, the program highlights the importance of compassion and inclusivity, even in the most challenging environments.
