Record number of families cross U.S.-Mexico border last month
Data obtained by The Washington Post shows that more than 91,000 migrants were apprehended by the Border Patrol
WASHINGTON – A record number of migrant families have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in the month of August.
Data obtained by The Washington Post shows that more than 91,000 migrants were apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol, the highest number ever recorded in a single month.
According to the report, this is the first time since President Biden took office that families have accounted for the largest share of migrant crossings.
The total number of migrants apprehended in August was also significantly higher than in previous months, with more than 177,000 apprehensions.
The Biden administration has defended its policy, saying it wants to toughen penalties for migrants who cross the border illegally.
At the same time, however, it is opening the door for migrants to take additional legal routes.
However, the increasing number of migrants crossing the country is likely to pose a political challenge for Biden ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Most of the migrant families crossing the border last month were from Central America.
Many of the families were fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries.
Republicans have accused the administration of being too lenient on illegal immigration.
The Biden administration has said it is working to address the root causes of migration from Central America, but is also taking steps to secure the border.
