Rare tablet inscribed with 10 commandments expected to fetch $2 million at auction
A 1,500-year-old stone tablet inscribed with the Ten Commandments is set to be auctioned for up to $2 million next month.
Discovered in 1913 in southern Palestine, this ancient relic dates back to the Late Roman-Byzantine period.
Experts believe it was once displayed in a synagogue or a private home, making it a rare link to ancient faiths and cultures.
Weighing 115 pounds and standing 2 feet tall, the tablet originally was overlooked, even used as a paving stone for decades.
The inscription, written in Old Hebrew, contains 20 lines of text and features nine of the Ten Commandments, omitting the one about not taking the Lord’s name in vain.
It will be on display at Sotheby’s New York showroom starting Dec. 5.
