Quran Burning ‘Tour’ Spotlights Sweden’s Rising Far-Right
Sweden, a country viewed as a safe haven for refugees, was set aflame when riots erupted last week.
The unrest comes after anti-Muslim Danish-Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan announced his burning “tour” of the Quran during the month of Ramadan.
More than 40 people have been arrested and some injured when protesters took to the streets against authorities’ decision to allow Paludan’s far-right group’s book-burning plans.
Azra Muranovic, deputy chair of the Municipal Council of Vernamo, said it was “a planned and distasteful campaign to provoke riots by using freedom of speech.”
In 2020, Paludan and his Stram Kurs or Hard Line party were banned from Belgium for a year, over plans to burn the Quran in an area of the capital Brussels largely occupied by Muslims.
Paludan was also deported from France after suggesting the same in Paris.
