Quran burned and thrown in front of mosque in Germany
BERLIN (AA) – A copy of the Holy Quran was burned and thrown in front of a mosque in southwestern Germany.
According to the Turkish Muslim umbrella organization DITIB, the incident occurred on July 8 in front of the Mimar Sinan Mosque.
The mosque is located in the town of Maulbronn in Baden-Wuerttemberg province.
Osman Adibelli, director of the mosque association, said that after reviewing surveillance footage, it was noticed that an object was thrown from a vehicle in front of the mosque.
“After the incident, when we reviewed surveillance footage of our mosque, we saw that an object was thrown in front of the mosque from a vehicle on the main street. Around 4.45 am (0245GMT), our congregation members who came for morning prayers noticed a burned Quran at the entrance of the mosque,” he said.
It turned out to be a burned copy of the Holy Quran at the entrance of the mosque.
Adibelli said they filed a criminal complaint over the incident.
He said an investigation has been launched.
The incident joins a series of burnings or desecrations of the Muslim holy book in various European countries.
Muslim leaders and politicians have stressed that such desecrations and provocations are not covered by free speech laws.
