Qatar’s Younousse and Tijan reach Samila Open semi-finals unbeaten
Top-ranked Asian beach volleyball duo set for showdown with Iran after flawless run in Thailand
DOHA, Qatar (MNTV) – Qatar’s premier beach volleyball team, Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, advanced to the semi-finals of the AVC Beach Tour Samila Open in Thailand after maintaining an unblemished record throughout the tournament.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalists secured a straight-sets victory over Australia’s Paul Burnett and Luke Ryan in Tuesday’s quarter-final, winning 21–18, 21–16 in a match that lasted 36 minutes.
Earlier in the competition, the Qatari duo posted a dominant performance during the group stage. They began their campaign with a commanding 21–8, 21–6 win over Hong Kong’s S.H. Kan and C. Wong in just 24 minutes, followed by a hard-fought 21–11, 26–24 victory over Kazakhstan’s Sergey Bogatu and Kirill Gurin in 47 minutes.
Younousse and Tijan then swept Iran’s Salemi and Ghalehnovi 21–13, 21–9 in 33 minutes, before closing the group stage with a 21–15, 21–14 triumph over Indonesia’s Danangsyah Pribadi and Yosi Firnanda in a 39-minute contest.
Ranked 12th globally and the top team in Asia, Younousse and Tijan will face Iran’s leading duo, Abbas Pourasgari and Alireza Aghajanighasab, in the semi-final later today. The final is scheduled to be held later in the evening.
