Qatar to build 1 million apartments in Indonesia starting April
First phase of $18-20 billion project aims to address housing shortage
JAKARTA, Indonesia (MNTV) – Qatar is set to begin constructing 1 million apartment units in Indonesia this April as part of a government initiative to reduce the country’s housing deficit.
Housing Task Force Head Hashim Djojohadikusumo stated that Qatari investment for the project’s first phase is estimated between $18 billion and $20 billion, according to Jakarta Globe.
“The first project will start in April, after Eid. Qatari investors are bringing capital to build 1 million apartments,” Hashim confirmed.
A memorandum of understanding was signed on January 8 at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta by Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait and Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Thani of Qatar’s Qilaa International Group.
Beyond this initial phase, Qatar plans to expand its investment to fund the construction of an additional 3 to 5 million housing units across urban and rural areas.
Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Investment Company is also expected to join the initiative, funding 1 million apartments.
Hashim noted growing interest from international investors, with nations like India, Singapore, and Turkey expressing readiness to invest in Indonesia’s housing sector.
To support the program, the government is offering unused state-owned land to investors.
These properties, managed by agencies such as railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia and housing developer Perumnas, will undergo site surveys by Qatari representatives to determine the first development locations.
President Prabowo Subianto has set an ambitious target to build 3 million homes annually—2 million in villages and 1 million in cities—to address the nation’s housing backlog of 12.7 million units.
