Protests outside U.S. Capitol after Israeli president’s speech to joint session
WASHINGTON – Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the U.S. Capitol as Israeli President Isaac Herzog delivered a speech to Congress on Wednesday.
The Israeli-American demonstrators said they wanted to send a message to President Biden that he should stand up for democracy in Israel.
They said Biden should not allow Israel to slide into dictatorship.
Speakers not only lamented the overhaul of the judiciary, but also urged Herzog not to underestimate the threat to Israeli democracy.
After his meeting with Israeli President Herzog at the White House, U.S. President Joe Biden told The New York Times that he urged Israeli leaders to stop the judicial overhaul bill.
The meeting between Herzog and Biden took place on Tuesday as protests were taking place across Israel against the Israeli government’s judicial reform.
