Protesters urge Biden to shut down Guantanamo
Peace activists protested in front of the New York Public Library on Saturday, marking the 23rd anniversary of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp’s establishment.
The prison, which opened Jan. 11, 2002, currently holds 35 detainees, with 20 cleared for release.
Protesters condemned its ongoing operation, citing violations of human rights and Catholic teachings.
Guantanamo Bay prison has faced criticism for holding prisoners without charges and using torture.
Seven deaths have been recorded as suicides.
Activists are urging President Joe Biden to close the facility before his term ends on January 20.
