Prosecutors oppose dismissing Trump’s hush money conviction
New York prosecutors have opposed the dismissal of President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money conviction.
However, they have expressed willingness to delay sentencing until after his second term.
Trump’s legal team requested the case be dropped, citing the need for a smooth transition of executive power.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office maintained the case, stemming from Trump’s 2016 payment to suppress a sex story, should not be dismissed simply due to his upcoming presidency.
Trump was convicted of falsifying business records to conceal the $130,000 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.
Prosecutors have acknowledged the unique legal challenges posed by his return to the White House, but emphasize the jury’s role in the judicial system.
A decision is pending, and Judge Juan Merchan will determine the case’s next steps.
Trump continues to deny any wrongdoing, calling the case a “witch hunt.”
