Progressive forces vow ‘unprecedented resistance’ to Trump 2.0
Progressive political activists in the U.S. have expressed disappointment at Donald Trump’s victory on Tuesday.
However, they say they are planning a major mobilization to counter the policies and attacks they expect will be put forward by Trump in his second term.
ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said Trump poses a clear danger to the country’s institutions and democratic norms.
He believes Trump will target anyone who disagrees with him.
Romero said the ACLU fully expects Trump to deploy federal law enforcement to shut down protests and muzzle dissent.
However, he is hopeful the organization will be able to legally challenge this, noting that it successfully filed more than 400 legal actions against the president-elect in his first administration.
Romero said the ACLU often won landmark cases, even with Trump-appointed judges overseeing them.
Similarly, the Center for Biological Diversity has been one of many groups that have warned a Trump victory would signal a disaster for the planet.
The organization says Trump can expect to face “unprecedented resistance” this time.
Similar sentiments were expressed by abortion rights activists.
Journalist Mehdi Hasan of Zeteo is urging progressive organizers to make “solidarity” the most important word in their political vocabulary as they prepare for the challenges of a second Trump administration.
