Police in Ethiopian region bordering Somalia kill some 100 al-Shabaab terrorists: Report
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) – Over 100 al-Shabaab fighters who crossed the border from Somalia into neighboring Ethiopia’s Somali state were killed on Friday by local paramilitary police, according to Somalia’s national TV.
The operation took place in Ethiopia’s Afder region and came after the group members crossed the border late Thursday.
“Around 100 al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in offensive operations conducted by security forces of Ethiopia’s Somali state in the last 24 hours. This came after terrorists attacked the Afder region,” said Somalia’s SNTV, quoting local officials.
Al-Shabaab members crossed the border after storming several frontier towns in southwestern Somalia on Thursday, killing over a dozen people, including civilians.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Mohamed Abdi Toll, the governor of Somalia’s Bokol region, which borders Ethiopia, confirmed the presence in the border area of Ethiopian Somali state police known as Liyu but declined to speak about the operations.
Al-Shabaab claimed recent attacks on towns in Somalia close to the border with Ethiopia, saying it killed 87 policemen.
It is the first time al-Shabaab launched such border attacks, though the group has been known to cross the border into Kenya to launch attacks, including one on Garisa University in 2015 that killed more than 148 people, mostly students.
The group has been fighting in Somalia against the federal government as well as African Union troops in the country.
