Philippines steps up to host Afghan resettlement applicants for US
The Philippines has agreed to temporarily host a select group of about 300 Afghans awaiting resettlement in the United States.
Under this agreement, the US government will provide essential services, including food, housing, medical care, and security for these refugees as their visas are processed.
The move marks a continuation of Operation Allies Welcome, which aims to resettle Afghans who previously worked with US forces.
More than 160,000 Afghans have been resettled in the US since 2021, when the Taliban regained control of the country following Washington’s withdrawal of its forces.
Thousands of others are in third countries awaiting visa processing for possible relocation to the US.
Observers say the agreement underscores the strengthening ties between Washington and Manila, particularly under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Marcos has shifted the country’s foreign policy from China to a closer alignment with the US.
