MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is set to open its first Islamic institute of higher learning, the Kuliyyah Institution in Buluan.
The institution will be supervised by the Bangsamoro Education Ministry and will offer courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Bangsamoro, is an autonomous region in the Philippines, located in the southwestern portion of the island of Mindanao.
A relevant legislation related to setting up the institution is expected to be passed soon.
The institution is seen as a unique opportunity for Muslim Filipinos to study Islamic and Arabic studies.
The move is part of the government’s efforts to promote peace and development in the southern Philippines, where most of the population is Muslim.
The institution is expected to attract students from all over the Philippines and the world.
The government of the Philippines signed a peace agreement in 2014 with the country’s largest rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, ending four decades of conflict and insurgency in the south.
