Philippines expands halal tourism to attract Muslim travelers
Govt introduces Muslim-friendly accommodations, enhances air links with Gulf nations
MANILA, Philippines (MNTV) – The Philippines is stepping up efforts to tap into the booming global halal tourism market, introducing new standards and improving connectivity to attract more visitors from Muslim-majority nations.
With its predominantly Catholic population, the Philippines is home to a significant Muslim minority and boasts over 600 years of Islamic heritage.
The government now aims to blend this rich cultural legacy with its renowned beaches, world-class diving sites, and warm hospitality to appeal to travelers from the Middle East and beyond.
“It has only been recently that Muslim-friendly initiatives have gained momentum, but the Department of Tourism (DOT) has already put several programs in place to attract Muslim travelers, including those from the Middle East,” Tourism Undersecretary Myra Paz Abubakar told Arab News.
Among the key initiatives is the Muslim-friendly accommodation establishments program, which sets specific standards for hotels and resorts to better serve Muslim guests. These include designated prayer areas, halal-certified dining options, and culturally sensitive services.
“From reception areas to guest rooms and prayer facilities, we want our Muslim visitors to feel at home,” Abubakar said.
She added that the DOT has also launched a training module to educate tourism stakeholders on halal and Muslim-friendly practices.
The Philippines currently has 17 officially recognized Muslim-friendly accommodations, and authorities plan to expand the program further.
In addition, efforts are underway to boost air connectivity between the Philippines and Gulf states, ensuring smoother travel for visitors from the region.
By embracing the halal tourism sector, the Philippines hopes to position itself as a welcoming destination for Muslim travelers, ensuring they can enjoy their stay without compromising their faith.
