Palestinian president visits Jenin after Israeli raid
RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas visited the West Bank city of Jenin on Wednesday. The town was the target of Israeli raids that killed 13 people and left a trail of devastation.
Abbas arrived in the city aboard a Jordanian helicopter from Ramallah. According to official Palestinian television, Abbas visited the Jenin Martyrs’ Cemetery.
He was received by Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh and other officials. Abbas said the heroic Jenin camp had resisted aggression and made sacrifices for the homeland.
“The Jenin camp is an icon of resistance and steadfastness,” Abbas said in a speech during his visit.
“The heroic Jenin camp withstood the aggression and made sacrifices for the sake of the homeland,” he added.
The Palestinian president thanked the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Algeria for their donations for the reconstruction of Jenin camp.
He said East Jerusalem is the capital of the State of Palestine and we will stand firm and not leave the land.
Wednesday’s visit was Abbas’ first to Jenin since 2012.
Abbas does not normally visit Palestinian cities, with the exception of Bethlehem at Christmas.
