Palestinian family’s fight to keep its house continues
JERUSALEM, WEST BANK (AA): An Israeli court sent the file of the Palestinian family that has been fighting the eviction order from its house in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem to the execution judge for the evaluation of the objections on Tuesday.
An appeal hearing was held at the Jerusalem Magistrates Court of Israel. It was attended by 73-year-old Fatima Salim and other family members, their lawyer Majid Al-Ghanaim and Member of the Joint List in the Israeli Assembly Osama Sadi as well as Palestinians and Israelis who support the family.
A group of human rights activists protested the hearing outside of the court.
Last year, tensions ran high in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood after an Israeli court ordered the eviction of several Palestinian families in favour of Israeli settlers.
In 1956, 28 families settled in Sheikh Jarrah under an agreement between the Jordanian government, which ruled the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, before the Israeli occupation in 1967, and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Israeli settlement associations, however, claim that the homes were built on land that was owned by Jews before 1948, a claim vehemently rejected by Palestinians.
Amnesty International recently declared Israel guilty of the crime of apartheid against Palestinians.
