Pakistan’s Parliament Elects Shehbaz Sharif As New PM
Pakistan’s parliament elected Shehbaz Sharif as the 23rd prime minister today after the ouster of Imran Khan following a no-confidence vote.
Sharif, the younger brother of three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was the candidate of the combined opposition.
The 70-year-old previously served as chief minister in the province of Punjab, where he developed a reputation as an efficient administrator.
Sharif has called for improving ties with the U.S., a noticeable departure from Khan’s frosty views regarding Washington.
Khan has accused the U.S. of orchestrating his removal.
On Monday, Khan’s party, the PTI, decided to resign from the National Assembly, minutes before the election for the new prime minister was scheduled to take place.
PTI Central Information Secretary Farrukh Habib tweeted that “The parliamentary party has decided to resign from the assemblies against the imported government.”
