Pakistan-born engineering student helps US bridge digital divide
WASHINGTON – A Pakistani-born engineering student is helping the US to bridge the digital divide.
Taimoor UI Islam, a student in electrical engineering and computer science, has been working at ARA wireless living lab for two and a half years to bring digital technology to rural areas.
ARA is a platform for advanced wireless research deployed on the Iowa State University campus in Ames and surrounding rural areas.
The goal of ARA is to develop rural wireless technologies that can provide affordable, high-capacity connectivity to rural communities and industries.
Islam has been involved in all aspects of the ARA project, from planning and procurement to installation and connectivity.
He has also worked with agricultural producers in the field to troubleshoot issues and monitor the progress of the project.
The ARA project aims to close the digital divide in rural America.
Islam worked with the other team members on all aspects of ARA: Design, Procurement, Installation, and Connectivity.
Being from Pakistan, he knows the problems of the digital divide. The lab he works in is the first of its kind to focus on rural broadband networks.
