Over 500 Academics Call For End To Climate Research Funded By Fossil Fuel Industry
On Monday, over 500 leading climate experts and academics urged universities in the U.S. and the U.K. to reject environmental or energy research funding from the fossil fuel industry.
Peter Kalmus, a climate scientist at NASA and one of the signatories of the open letter, said that means refusing to lend their reputations to the industry’s “greenwashing.”
Greenwashing refers to the practice of companies claiming to be environmentally conscious for marketing purposes, but not making any actual efforts at sustainability.
The letter was released by Fossil Free Research — an international campaign calling on universities to sever ties with the fossil fuel industry.
