North Korea unveils tactical nuclear submarine
Experts describe this as a strategic move by North Korea to expand its naval capabilities against the U.S. and its Asian partners
WASHINGTON – North Korea led by Kim Jong Un has unveiled its first “tactical nuclear attack submarine.”
Experts describe this as a strategic move by North Korea to expand its naval capabilities against the U.S. and its Asian partners.
The submarine, christened Hero Kim Kun Ok, was unveiled at an event overseen by Kim, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
This vessel, designed to deploy underwater nuclear weapons, represents a defining moment for North Korea’s naval forces.
The exact missile capacity of the submarine was not disclosed.
Kim stressed that the Hero Kim Kun Ok, which will be positioned between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, will be an essential part of North Korea’s naval strategy.
He also indicated that the current submarine fleet will be further nuclear upgraded.
North Korea’s weapons tests, including its claim to possess a new class of submarine-launched missiles, show Kim’s desire to improve the country’s defense capabilities, even as U.N. sanctions limit them.
A high-level Chinese group will also visit North Korea ahead of celebrations marking the country’s 75th founding anniversary.
Meanwhile, according to U.S. intelligence reports, Kim is expected to travel to Russia soon for talks with President Vladimir Putin that may involve arms shipments and other aid and technological assistance.
