No calls from EU for cease-fire in Mideast at this stage: spokesperson
BRUSSELS (AA) – There are no calls from the European Union for a cease-fire in Gaza, Peter Stano, a spokesperson of the bloc, said on Wednesday.
“Hamas keeps holding more than 200 hostages, most of them civilians. This is against any international law,” said Peter Stano, European Commission’s lead spokesperson on foreign affairs.
Stano reiterated the EU’s position and its support for Israel while saying: “Civilians must be protected everywhere regardless of where they are, on which side they are.”
Gaza has been under Israeli bombardment and a blockade since October 7.
More than 6,546 Palestinians have been killed, most of them children.
Gaza’s 2.3 million people have run out of food, water, medicines and fuel, and aid convoys allowed into Gaza have carried only a small fraction of what is needed.
