Nigeria justifies $3.5M in donation of vehicles to neighboring Niger
LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) – Nigeria on Wednesday justified the purchase and donation of $3.5 million in vehicles to neighboring Niger Republic.
Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed said the president has the right to approve the purchase after assessing the security situation in such a friendly country.
“Nigerians have the right to question. President Muhammadu Buhari, who approved the purchase, also has the right to make his own assessment on situations and then act accordingly,” she said.
Ahmed also maintained that Nigeria has a policy of assisting neighbors to strengthen their capacity in dealing with insecurity.
Criticisms have been leveled at the president’s approval of the purchase of the vehicles to Niger security forces since February when the information was leaked to the media.
Nigerians have demanded an explanation about the decision to spend the money on insecurity in another nation when Nigeria faces terror attacks, banditry and inadequate tools for security forces.
Nigeria and Niger are part of a military regional coalition with Cameroon and Chad that have formed a Joint Task Force against Boko Haram and other terror groups.
