News agencies warn White House against limiting media access
Reuters, AP, and Bloomberg have warned against limiting media access to the White House, calling it a threat to a free press.
In a joint statement, the news agencies stressed that democracy depends on an independent media covering the government.
They argued that restricting wire services from reporting on the president undermines this principle.
The concern follows the White House’s decision to control which journalists cover presidential events.
This task was traditionally handled by the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA).
WHCA President Eugene Daniels condemned the move, saying it weakens press independence and allows the government to pick its own reporters.
