New mouthwash to fight gum disease
-Mouthwash is still in the early stages of development, but it has shown promise in laboratory trials
BUDAPEST, Hungary – A new mouthwash that uses the body’s own immune system is being developed to fight gum disease.
Dr Zoltan Geczi, assistant professor at Semmelweis University,a research-led medical school in Budapest, Hungary said the mouthwash targets white blood cells instead of the bacteria that causes gum disease.
This approach has been used in cancer therapies to turn disease-causing cells into “pro-healing” cells.
Scientists say the early trials of the mouthwash are promising, and it could be available in the form of a mouthwash or gel in the future.
Gum disease is a common condition that can lead to tooth loss. It is also linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
The mouthwash contains folic acid and silver. These two ingredients work together to help transform the white blood cells into “pro-healing” cells.
The mouthwash is still in the early stages of development, but it has shown promise in laboratory trials.
