New law leads to mass exodus of workers from Florida
TALLAHASSEE, Florida – A new law is forcing thousands of workers to flee the U.S. state of Florida. The law to crack down on undocumented immigrants, signed by far-right Governor Ron DeSantis last month, goes into effect July 1.
The law requires businesses to verify the eligibility of all workers for employment. It has led to fears of a labor shortage in Florida, as many businesses rely on undocumented immigrants to fill jobs.
Even some Republican supporters oppose the law, saying it will negatively impact their bottom lines.
Graves Williams, a lifelong Republican who owns the Quincy Tomato Company, told news outlets that it is not possible to do business without immigrant workers.
“We all love them to death,” said Williams, whose family has been farming tomatoes for decades. We couldn’t run a business without them,” he told a local newspaper The Tallahassee Democrat.
The newspaper reported that construction, restaurants, landscaping, and many other service sectors in Florida are already struggling to fill jobs.
According to the newspaper, many business owners still refuse to speak publicly about the measure, fearing they may anger DeSantis.
DeSantis, is now campaigning for the 2024 presidential nomination. His xenophobic approach has sparked fears of labor shortage in every sector in Florida.
