New Jersey man faces justice for vandalism at Islamic center
A 24-year-old man from New Jersey has pleaded guilty to vandalizing the Center for Islamic Life at Rutgers University during the Eid-al-Fitr Muslim holiday.
Jacob Beacher of North Plainfield admitted to the federal hate crime of damaging religious property, which included stealing a Palestinian flag and a charity box while damaging prayer stones.
The total cost of the damage exceeds $5,000.
He faces up to three years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.
Sentencing for Beacher is scheduled for next year.
Obsevrers say the incident highlights a troubling rise in anti-Muslim complaints in New Jersey.
