Netanyahu calls African migrants a threat to Israel’s identity
Eritrean asylum seekers have witnessed confrontations between regime opponents and supporters in the past
TEL AVIV, Israel – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called African migrants, especially from Eritrea, a “real threat” to Israel’s identity as a Jewish state.
The statement followed violent clashes in Tel Aviv on Saturday involving asylum seekers from Eritrea that injured at least 140 people.
The unrest had occurred between supporters and critics of the Eritrean regime.
Netanyahu then called for the immediate deportation of migrants involved in those riots.
A ministerial committee was formed to take decisive action against those involved in such unrest.
Eritrean asylum seekers, more than 30,000 of whom are in Israel, have witnessed confrontations between regime opponents and supporters in the country in the past.
On the day of the incident, Israeli police had intervened in a demonstration by Eritreans, injuring demonstrators and 30 police officers.
According to local reports, police deployed a large number of soldiers to restore order in Tel Aviv.
The clashes, which were captured in various videos posted on social media, highlighted not only the conflicts between the police and the demonstrators, but also between opposing Eritrean factions.
