New research reveals that more than 40% of Americans aged 55 and older face a lifetime risk of developing dementia.
The study, published in Nature Medicine, tracked the health records of 15,000 diverse participants over 23 years.
Women and Black adults were found to have higher rates of dementia.
By 2060, around 1 million Americans will develop dementia annually.
The risk increases with age, rising from 4% between ages 55 and 75 to 20% by 85.
Dementia is a leading cause of disability and kills more than 100,000 people each year.
Experts stress the urgent need for preventive measures and healthy aging policies.
